Cat Enclosures

Freestanding and kit cat enclosures

Supply and assembly of quality kit catios and freestanding cat runs on a level base. A good option for renters or as a first enclosure. UK costs.

In short: A freestanding or kit cat enclosure is a ready-designed catio or run, supplied in panels or as a kit and assembled on a level base without being fixed to the house. It suits renters, owners trying a catio for the first time, and anyone who may move it later. Supplied and assembled, a kit enclosure typically costs around £400 to £1,500 in the UK.

Freestanding and kit cat enclosures

Kit enclosures range from small runs for one cat to modular walk-in catios that can be extended with extra panels and tunnels. The best ones use solid timber or powder-coated steel frames with welded mesh, but quality varies widely. Many cheap flat-pack runs online are built for rabbits or chickens, with thin timber, weak mesh and staples, and a determined cat or a fox can push straight through them.

Assembly is where kits often go wrong. A kit set on uneven ground twists out of square, doors stop closing and gaps open at the joins. We level the base first, assemble to the manufacturer's instructions, then add what kits often miss, such as better mesh fixings, ground anchors and a solid roof section for shelter. Because nothing is fixed to the house, the whole enclosure can be taken down and moved if you move home.

How it works

How freestanding and kit cat enclosures works, step by step
  1. Pick the right kit

We help you choose a kit with a strong frame and welded mesh that suits your space and cats, or assemble one you have already bought.

  2. Level the base

The ground is levelled, or a slab or paver base laid, so the frame sits square and doors close properly.

  3. Assemble and anchor

The kit is built, anchored to the base and checked for gaps at every joint.

  4. Upgrade weak points

Any weak mesh fixings, missing shelter or gaps at the base are fixed before your cats go in.

Freestanding and kit cat enclosures: FAQs

Are cheap flat-pack catios safe?

Some are, many are not. Lots of budget runs are designed for small animals and use thin timber, light mesh and staples. Cats are strong and persistent, and foxes can tear weak mesh. Look for welded wire mesh rather than chicken wire, solid frame sections, proper bolts or screws at the joints and a lockable door. If in doubt, ask for a quality kit or a bespoke build.

Can a kit catio go on decking?

Yes, provided the decking is sound and level. The enclosure should be screwed or bolted to the deck so it cannot move, and the gap under the deck boards should be checked so cats cannot get underneath. Older decking can be slippery and rotten in places, so check it first.

Can I move a kit enclosure when I move house?

Yes, that is one of the main advantages. Most kits can be taken apart and rebuilt if the panels and fixings are looked after. Expect to replace some screws and ground anchors, and to level a new base at the new home.

Can a kit enclosure be extended later?

Many modular kits can be extended with extra panels, sections or tunnels from the same manufacturer. Mixing brands is harder because panel sizes and fixings differ. A bespoke extension can also be built onto a kit, as long as the existing frame is in good condition.
